When someone has first been arrested it can be the most important time for them in terms of the investigation against them. It is therefore extremely important to speak or to ask to speak to a solicitor before it begins.

All Garda stations have a list of solicitors who will visit or take a call from someone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If it is a case that you have been asked to visit a station for either a voluntary statement or to be detained voluntarily, make sure to speak to a solicitor first to be informed of your rights and obligations in relation to attendance.

Do not feel awkward about asking to speak to a solicitor no matter how minor the matter is.

It is not uncommon for people to unknowingly give evidence against themselves in Garda stations which result in summons or charge sheets which may not have occurred otherwise.
